Description

Harvard Medical School Department of Education offers a variety of distance learning opportunities so that our CME programs can be accessible to health care professionals around the world. Our online programs are directed by HMS Faculty and go through an extensive planning and review process to ensure quality education that is unbiased, evidence-based, accurate, and up to date.

We offer a variety of learning formats. CME Online refers to case-based, interactive modules that are available on demand. DVD programs are available for purchase and can be viewed in video format or as an audio package. Webcasts refer to multimedia programs that are presented online, and Live Streaming Webcasts are online, multimedia events that happen in real time. Please see our Course List for more information.

We work with Harvard Medical School's Affiliates to develop our courses.

GRAHAM MCMAHON, MD MMSc
Associate Dean for Continuing Education

The Department of Continuing Education at HMS welcomes Graham McMahon M.D., M.M.Sc. Associate Professor of Medicine and member of the Academy at Harvard Medical School, as its new Associate Dean. Dr. McMahon is an Associate Professor of Medicine and member of the Academy at Harvard Medical School. He is the fellowship Program Director and member of the faculty in the division of endocrinology, diabetes and hypertension at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston where he completed his postgraduate training.


Dr. McMahon received his medical education at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, a Master’s Degree in clinical research from Harvard Medical School, and his doctorate in education from the National University of Ireland. He is the Chief Editor for medical education at the New England Journal of Medicine and executive editor for NEJM Knowledge + a novel, adaptive and personalized learning system for physicians. Dr. McMahon is the co-director of center for expertise in medical education. Additionally, he directs the endocrinology course at Harvard Medical School and the tutorial program for “Introduction to the Profession.” Dr. McMahon has also directed a new integrated teaching unit at the Faulkner Hospital. He has received local and national awards for his teaching and his work in medical education and diabetes research.


His work has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Diabetes Care, the Archives of Internal Medicine, the Journal of General Internal Medicine, and Medical Education. His research interests include systems of care for patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease in diabetes, and medical education.

MARY LOU TOWNSEND, M.Ed.
Executive Director

As a core member of the leadership team in the Department of Continuing Education, Mary Lou serves as a strategic partner to the department senior leadership and staff, as well as the faculty and Medical School departments to ensure policies and procedures are in place to meet compliance with CME accreditation.

Mary Lou earned her M.Ed. in Rehabilitation Counseling from Northeastern University and graduated from Westfield State College with a degree in Elementary/Special Education. Her professional interests focus on business operations, system definition and implementation and process optimization.

ANDI LONG, EdM
Associate Director of Academic Technology

Andi Long directs the Department of Continuing Education’s Distance Learning group, which offers a variety of online continuing medical education programs to health care professionals around the world. Andi develops strategies for new pilot programs and systematically rolls out new distance learning initiatives and has a leadership role in IT planning and other online processes for HMS DCE. She oversees the day-to-day operations of each distance learning activity and ensures ACCME compliance across all enduring programs. She has had the privilege of working with hundreds of Harvard Medical School Faculty members to develop high-quality, engaging online programs that physicians in more than 170 countries have taken part in.

Andi earned her Ed.M. in Technology, Innovation, and Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education and graduated from Bridgewater State College with a degree in English. Her professional interests focus on teaching and learning with new technologies and online course development.

FELICITY LONG
Web Content and Project Officer

Felicity Long is the CME Online Web Content and Project Officer in the Harvard Medical School Department of Continuing Education. She is involved in all aspects of the CME Online activity development lifecycle, from a course’s planning stage through its development, peer-review, and accreditation. She also oversees the programing of content for CME Online courses, including copyright permissions. She is a graduate of Middlebury College and has been an editor and journalist for more than 15 years.
