Presentations of the Red Eye

Course Description

The course will provide a series of multiple-choice question based cases in common and vision-threatening clinical entities that are encountered in the red eye. The cases will feature multimedia content to engage the participant. The course is under the direction of Dr. Louis R. Pasquale.

Emergency Medicine physicians as well as primary care physicians (e.g., Internists, Family Practice physicians, and Pediatricians) who practice Emergency Medicine are the target audience for the course. The participants will have an opportunity to review and advance their knowledge of current practice patterns and recent advances in clinical emergency medicine by taking the course. They will be required to complete all content associated with the course (their progress is electronically tracked). In addition, all participants will be required to correctly answer all associated multiple-choice questions during the course. A standardized level of care equivalent to a typical community level hospital in the United States of America will be employed.

OVERALL LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Properly diagnose and treat red eye cases that do not need referral to the ophthalmologist
  2. Recognize red eye cases that require prompt referral to an ophthalmologist
  3. Be aware of pitfalls to avoid in the management of the red eye

CLINICAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. • Summarize the diagnostic approach and treatment of corneal abrasion in various settings.
  2. Understand the pathophysiology of bleparitis and describe its treatment and management.
  3. Describe key features that differentiate conjunctivitis from other conditions like episcleritis, scleritis, keratitis and uveitis
  4. Elaborate on the treatment of microbial conjunctivitis
  5. Recognize the presentation of orbital celluliitis and differentiate it from periorbital cellulites

Course Director
Dr. Louis Pasquale is Co-Director of the Glaucoma Service at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. He is interested in developing strategies to prevent functional visual loss from open-angle glaucoma.

Douglas Kohl completed his medical school training at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in 1999 and went on to complete his ophthalmology residency at the Kresge Eye Institute in 2003. He is currently a clinical fellow in Glaucoma at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. After the conclusion of his fellowship in July 2004, he will be going into private practice in Boca Raton, Florida. His clinical interests include secondary glaucomas and ophthalmic surgical outcomes.
