Course Description

This online course provides a review of the epidemiology and risk factors, screening and treatment of colorectal cancer. Participants will review a case from initial presentation for a routine visit to their general internists to screening to work-up and treatment.

OVERALL LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Review risk factors and screening guidelines for colorectal cancer.

CLINICAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Review work-up and staging for patients with colorectal cancer.
  2. Review treatment options for patients with colorectal cancer, depending on stage of disease.
  3. Review follow-up surveillance of colorectal cancer survivors.

METHOD OF PARTICIPATION:

Registrants participate in the learning process by answering interactive multiple choice questions that are dispersed throughout the case presentation. You must answer a question correctly in order to continue through the course. If you answer a question incorrectly, you will be prompted to try again.

In order to earn credit, physicians must complete the entire educational activity before the termination date (see above). Non-physicians may register for the course but are not eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Instead, non-physicians will earn a certificate of participation after successfully completing the course before its termination date.

COMBINATION OF MEDIA USED:

This internet enduring material is a case-based, interactive presentation comprised mainly of text, interactive questions, and images. A variety of media, including video clips, audio clips, and Flash animation, may be presented. Links to any necessary plugins are provided when necessary, but no plugins are required for general use of the CME website, and you may skip the multimedia presentation(s) within the course if you choose.

JEFFREY MEYERHARDT, MD, MPH
Course Director
Dr. Meyerhardt is an Associate Physician of the Department of Medical Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, member of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Meyerhardt conducts outcomes research in patients with gastrointestinal cancer, particularly the relationship between diet and lifestyle on patients with colorectal cancer. In addition, he has served as lead investigator and co-investigator of multiple clinical trials for patients with gastrointestinal cancers. Dr. Meyerhardt received his undergraduate degree from Haverford College, medical degree at Yale School of Medicine and Masters of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health.

ROBERT MAYER, MD

Dr. Mayer is Vice Chair for Academic Affairs of the Department of Medical Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Senior Physician at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Stephen B. Kay Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School where he is also Faculty Associate Dean for Admissions. He has directed the Institute's Medical Oncology Training Program since 1975 and is presently the Director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program of Dana-Farber/Partners CancerCare. Dr. Mayer's research interests focus on gastrointestinal cancer a subject about which he has published extensively. Dr. Mayer established the Center for Gastrointestinal Oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and is the past Chair of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Committee of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, a cooperative group sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. He has served as an Associate Editor for the New England Journal of Medicine, is a past President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Association of Subspecialty Professors and is a former member of the Executive Committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Mayer is a graduate of Williams College and the Harvard Medical School.

DAVID P. RYAN, MD

David P Ryan, MD is Clinical Director, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Director of the Gosnell Center for Gastrointestinal Cancers Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Associate Chief Hematology Oncology, Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School. He graduated in medicine from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY in 1992 where he remained for his internship and medical residency. Dr Ryan undertook his hematology and oncology training at Dana Faber Cancer Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. In 1998, he was appointed Clinical Assistant in Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, then Assistant in Medicine before assuming his present position in 2009.

The principal focus of Dr. Ryan’s clinical research is the design and implementation of Phases I and II trials in gastrointestinal malignancies. Since 1998 he has been a member of both the Experimental Therapeutics Group and the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center where he has been the Director since 2003. Dr. Ryan’s clinical practice focuses exclusively on gastrointestinal oncology.

He is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the New England Cancer Society. Dr Ryan sits on the editorial board of Clinical Cancer Research and is a reviewer for Journal of Clinical Oncology and New England Journal of Medicine. He has published over 50 articles in peer review journals, reviews, book chapters and editorials and authored numerous abstracts.

ANDREW ZHU, MD, PHD

Dr. Andrew X. Zhu is an attending Oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, a Staff Physician at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and a Member of Dana-Farber Harvard Cancer Center in Boston, Mass. He is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Zhu is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, and holds clinical research interests in developing novel treatments for gastrointestinal cancers including hepatocellular carcinoma, bile duct tumor, and colorectal cancer. Dr. Zhu received his medical degree from Beijing Medical University in China and his doctor of philosophy in microbiology from Columbia University in New York City. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics and Yale-New Haven Hospital. After a fellowship in molecular biology at Harvard Medical School, he was a Mortimer Lacher Fellow in medical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. As a widely published author, Dr. Zhu has served as principle investigator in many clinical trials in hepatobiliary and colorectal cancers and has published papers on many leading journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, and Cancer. He is a founding board member of the International Liver Cancer Association and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Physicians, and the American Association for Cancer Research.

SANJIV CHOPRA, MD
Planner
Dr. Sanjiv Chopra is Professor of Medicine and Faculty Dean for Continuing Medical Education at Harvard Medical School and Senior Consultant in Hepatology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston. In his role as Faculty Dean for Continuing Education, Dr. Chopra provides oversight and leadership of the Department and oversees the academic development of our programs. Dr. Chopra is an experienced clinician, researcher, and educator. In his research roles, he has served both as a principal investigator as well as co-investigator. He has more than 120 publications and five books to his credit, addressing topics in disease states, patient care, and leadership. Dr. Chopra’s teaching experience is extensive, and he has won numerous teaching awards for his work with medical students, residents and physicians. Andi Long directs the Department of Continuing Education’s Distance Learning group, which offers a variety of online continuing medical education programs to health care professionals around the world. Andi develops strategies for new pilot programs and systematically rolls out new distance learning initiatives and has a leadership role in IT planning and other online processes for HMS DCE. She oversees the day-to-day operations of each distance learning activity and ensures ACCME compliance across all enduring programs. She has had the privilege of working with hundreds of Harvard Medical School Faculty members to develop high-quality, engaging online programs that physicians in more than 170 countries have taken part in. Andi earned her Ed.M. in Technology, Innovation, and Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education and graduated from Bridgewater State College, summa cum laude, with a degree in English. Her professional interests focus on teaching and learning with new technologies and online course development.
