The course will cover the work up and management of vaginal bleeding in the acute care setting, spontaneous abortion, as well as contraception and sterilization.
The course will provide practical information for primary care providers, nurse practitioners, residents, medical students as well as the practicing obstetrician/gynecologist.

OVERALL LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The objective of this program is to update the practicing clinician regarding recent developments regarding diagnosis and management of early pregnancy complications.

Review patient evaluation for initiation and surveillance of contraception
- Discuss the basic work-up of vaginal bleeding in the acute care setting
- Describe common causes of acute vaginal bleeding
- Integrate ultrasound findings with clinical scenarios
- Discuss treatment of common gynecologic emergency such as ectopic pregnancy
- Review contraindications to the different available contraceptive choices
- Illustrate essential factors in selecting a contraceptive with a patient
METHOD OF PARTICIPATION:
Registrants participate in the learning process by answering interactive multiple choice questions that are dispersed throughout the case presentation. You must answer a question correctly in order to continue through the course. If you answer a question incorrectly, you will be prompted to try again.
In order to earn credit, physicians must complete the entire educational activity before the termination date (see above). Non-physicians may register for the course but are not eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Instead, non-physicians will earn a certificate of participation after successfully completing the course before its termination date.
COMBINATION OF MEDIA USED:
This internet enduring material is a case-based, interactive presentation comprised mainly of text, interactive questions, and images. A variety of media, including video clips, audio clips, and Flash animation, may be presented. Links to any necessary plugins are provided when necessary, but no plugins are required for general use of the CME website, and you may skip the multimedia presentation(s) within the course if you choose.

JON EINARSSON, MD
Course Director |
Dr. Einarsson directs the Division of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS) at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and is an Associate Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Einarsson is internationally known in his field and has lectured and operated nationally and internationally. He has won several prestigious awards, including the Golden Laparoscope Award in 2011. His referral practice is focused on performing challenging laparoscopic cases, and the MIGS Division is very active in implementing clinical research projects and teaching activities.

DANIELA CARUSI, MD

Dr. Carusi is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Harvard Medical School, and Director of General Gynecology at Brigham & Women's Hospital. She has both written and lectured on contraception for medically complicated patients, and initiated a specialty referral practice to provide contraception to high-risk patients. Dr. Carusi spends much of her time teaching medical students, residents, and graduate students in both the classroom and clinical settings. Her other interests include appropriate use of diagnostic and screening tests, quality improvement, and obstetric and gynecologic surgery.

MINDY S. CHRISTIANSON, MD

Dr. Christianson is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Currently a Clinical Fellow in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, her research interests include oocyte biology, fertility preservation and menopause. She has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals in the area of infertility. She is also in the process of developing a national menopause curriculum for OB/Gyn residents.

Dr. Cohen is an Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Cohen is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins Hospital residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as the Brigham and Women’s Hospital fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery. She completed her Masters of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Sanjiv Chopra is Professor of Medicine and Faculty Dean for Continuing Medical Education at Harvard Medical School and Senior Consultant in Hepatology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston. Andi Long directs the Department of Continuing Education’s Distance Learning group, which offers a variety of online continuing medical education programs to health care professionals around the world. Andi develops strategies for new pilot programs and systematically rolls out new distance learning initiatives and has a leadership role in IT planning and other online processes for HMS DCE. She oversees the day-to-day operations of each distance learning activity and ensures ACCME compliance across all enduring programs.
